Last week was a whirlwind of fun as KIN held VBS in the City in Norwood Manor Apartments. Crossing denominational lines, a total of 38 volunteers and 55 kids from many different cultures came out over the course of 4 days to help KIN pull off a wonderful week, beginning with our Registration Block Party on Monday night.
The lawn next to Norwood Manor's office building was quickly transformed into a miniature carnival, complete with a big tent, corn hole games, sno cones, popcorn, soccer, and face painting!
The registration table was under the big tent, and throughout the party the kids came over to sign up for the week and receive their Gforce T-shirt. We were delighted that one group of siblings brought their visiting friends to come have fun with us!
Across the yard, cold and refreshing sno cones were served in a variety of flavors- sometimes all the flavors at once! The sno cones were the perfect frozen treat for this hot summer night.
The first thing each person saw as they arrived was Ms. Michelle's spin art! Each kid got to choose what paint they used and watch it swirl onto their spinning piece of paper. It's amazing what beautiful pictures the kids created with just a few squirts of paint!
Meanwhile, Alexa, Abigail and Anna did a fabulous job painting faces. Some of their masterpieces included flowers, dogs, cats, soccer balls, baseballs, suns, and even dinosaurs!
The older boys took to the back field to play soccer. I've been told that soccer is a universal language, able to break down cultural barriers when a group of people come together in the spirit of the game. When someone much smaller than our teen boys came over to play, they all kindly agreed to remove their shoes so no one would accidentally get kicked. They must have had a lot of fun, because most of them played for the entire 3 hours!
Overall, our registration party was a great success, and a lot of fun was had by all! As the party started to wind down, volunteers packed up their supplies and the kids lingered to laugh and talk with their friends- but everyone was anticipating the days of VBS that had yet to begin. Stay tuned for a recap of Tuesday morning!
