When Gloria Dombo arrived from Ghana to the US in 1997, the only thing on her mind was getting the rest of her family here. She had won the visa lottery to immigrate to the US and the laws at that time allowed only the individual winner to take advantage of the offer, not whole families.

With support from many friends at KIN partner, Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church, who petitioned the government on the family's behalf, her family slowly joined her, one by one, her two young sons and then her husband. The whole process took about 4 years following her own arrival.

The family enjoyed their Knoxville life, made many friends, and Gloria has seen her little boys now become young men. Anticipating impending retirement, Gloria decided she wasn't finished working. Having spent most of her life alternately using a walker and in a wheelchair, after contracting polio at the age of 4,

Gloria wanted to do something for a community in need of extra care. With the help of her sister and brother-in-law, who run a successful in-home care business in London, and a friend in Knoxville who also runs an in-home care business, Gloria made plans to start her own business.

Earning its service license last year, MD Home Care opened for business as a non-medical home care provider and is now hiring care givers and taking clients. She says, "My disability has helped me understand and appreciate need. I want to be part of that community helping the vulnerable."
